Bus from Poland to Ukraine: Routes, Border Time and How It Works
The cheapest way into Ukraine, and a direct one from most large Polish cities. The trade-off is the border: a bus crosses at the pace of its slowest passenger.

Where buses leave from
Direct buses run from most large Polish cities — Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Gdańsk, Poznań, Łódź, Katowice and Lublin — as well as from the border towns of Rzeszów and Przemyśl. The main destinations in Ukraine are Lviv and Kyiv, with routes onward to Lutsk, Rivne, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zhytomyr and other cities.
Several international and Ukrainian carriers operate these routes. Compare them on a ticket aggregator or the carrier's own website, and check three things before paying: the exact departure stop, the arrival point, and the carrier's luggage allowance.
How long it takes
The road part is predictable; the border is not. As rough guides:
- Przemyśl – Lviv: 3–5 hours, almost all of it the crossing.
- Kraków – Lviv: around 6–8 hours.
- Warsaw – Lviv: about 390 km by road — 7–9 hours when the border is quiet.
- Warsaw – Kyiv: typically 12–18 hours.
At the border itself, a bus typically spends 2–5 hours, and longer on weekends and around holidays. At the larger crossings buses are processed separately from cars, but they still queue among themselves.
What happens at the border
- Polish exit control. Passports are checked — sometimes collected by the driver and handed over as a stack, sometimes checked passenger by passenger.
- Ukrainian border control. The same, on the Ukrainian side. Officers may ask individual passengers about the purpose of travel and, sometimes, for proof of medical insurance.
- Customs. Usually everyone leaves the bus with their luggage, which goes through inspection or a scanner. Have the bags you packed yourself and nothing you are carrying for someone else.
The bus leaves only when every passenger has been cleared. One person with a problem — a missing visa, undeclared goods, an expired passport — holds up everyone. Which is a good reason to make sure it is not you.

Rules worth knowing
- Customs limits are the same as in a car: goods up to €500 and 50 kg per person, ordinary medicines up to 5 packages of each product, cash of €10,000 or more declared. Details in our guide to entering from Poland.
- Never carry packages for other people — not for the driver, not for a fellow passenger, not for someone at the bus station. At customs, everything in your bag is yours.
- Keep documents on you, not in the luggage hold: passport, visa if needed, and your insurance on your phone plus a printed copy.
- Bring food, water and a charged power bank. Border waits rarely come with a shop.
After you arrive
Long-distance buses often arrive at night, and curfew is in force — local authorities are recommended to set it from 01:00 to 05:00. Check the curfew hours at your destination and plan how you get from the bus station to your accommodation. If a red air-raid alert is declared, go to the nearest shelter: see how yellow and red alerts work.
If border queues are your main worry, the train is usually faster: control is done on board, without the road queue.
