Bus from Slovakia to Ukraine: Routes and the Border
Short hops from Košice to Uzhhorod, long runs from Bratislava, and bus-and-train combinations that are often faster than either alone. All of them squeeze through a single crossing.

Where buses go
- Košice – Uzhhorod — the core route: roughly two hours on the road, plus the border. Košice is the main hub on the Slovak side.
- Košice – Mukachevo — a little over three hours on the road.
- Bratislava – Uzhhorod — direct buses cross the whole of Slovakia; expect most of a day.
- Longer international routes from Slovakia and the Czech Republic continue to Lviv and Kyiv.
Several carriers operate these routes; compare on a ticket aggregator or the carriers' own sites, and check departure and arrival stops and the luggage allowance before paying.
Every bus uses Vyšné Nemecké
Of the three crossings into Ukraine, only Vyšné Nemecké – Uzhhorod accepts buses. Ubľa takes cars and minibuses only, and Veľké Slemence is for pedestrians and cyclists. With every bus, car and lorry funnelled through one crossing, the time a bus spends at the border varies a lot — from under an hour on a quiet weekday to several hours on Sundays and around holidays.
What happens at the border
- Slovak exit control — passports checked, sometimes collected by the driver.
- Ukrainian border control — officers may ask individual passengers about the purpose of travel and, sometimes, for proof of medical insurance.
- Customs — passengers usually leave the bus with their luggage for inspection.
The bus leaves only when everyone has been cleared.
Bus and train combined
Many travellers heading further into the EU combine a short bus leg with a train. A carrier-partner bus runs from Uzhhorod and Mukachevo to Košice, where you board a long-distance train toward Bratislava, Prague and beyond. In the other direction, take the train to Košice and the bus for the last stretch into Uzhhorod.
Or skip the road entirely: direct Slovak trains run from Košice to Chop and Mukachevo — see our train guide.
Rules worth knowing
- Customs limits: goods up to €500 and 50 kg per person, ordinary medicines up to 5 packages of each, cash of €10,000 or more declared. Details: entering Ukraine from Slovakia.
- Never carry packages for anyone else.
- Keep documents on you, not in the hold — passport, visa if needed, insurance on your phone and printed.
- Mind the clock: Ukraine is one hour ahead of Slovakia — check which time zone your ticket uses.
- Check curfew at your destination and know what to do during an alert: yellow and red alerts.
