Train from Slovakia to Ukraine: Košice, Bratislava and Chop
Slovakia runs its own trains straight into Ukraine — from Košice through Chop to Mukachevo — and a daily connection links Bratislava with the Ukrainian night train to Kyiv. The one thing to watch in 2026 is Chop itself.

Direct trains: Košice – Chop – Mukachevo
Slovak railway operator ZSSK runs direct trains from Košice through the border at Čierna nad Tisou – Chop to Mukachevo — usually about two a day in each direction. The journey takes around four hours, including the border stop at Chop.
These are Slovak standard-gauge trains that run through to Mukachevo, so there is no wheel change on this route: you sit in the same carriage from Košice to Mukachevo. (Why gauge matters elsewhere on this border — and why carriages to Budapest have their bogies changed at Chop — is explained in our train guide from Hungary.)
At Chop and Mukachevo you can change to Ukrainian trains to Lviv, Kyiv, Kharkiv and other cities.
Bratislava – Kyiv via Chop
Since December 2024 a daily connection links the two capitals: a Ukrainian night train runs from Kyiv to Chop (about 12 hours), and a ZSSK train with through carriages continues from Chop via Košice to Bratislava (roughly ten more hours), with modern seated Slovak carriages. The same works in reverse. Because Bratislava is close to Vienna, this is also a route on to Austria.
The Slovak part of the journey crosses the country end to end — plan it as a full day's travel on top of the night train.
Tickets
- Ukrainian trains — on booking.uz.gov.ua or in the Ukrainian Railways app.
- Slovak ZSSK trains — on the ZSSK website, or at the international ticket offices in Mukachevo and Chop stations.
- Buy each leg from the railway that operates it, and keep printed copies alongside the digital ones.
- Remember the time difference: Slovakia is one hour behind Ukraine, and timetables on each side use local time.
Border control at Chop
Trains between Slovakia and Ukraine stop at Chop for border and customs control. Have your passport and insurance ready — on your phone and printed. A second border-control hall was due to open at Chop station at the end of September 2026 to speed the process up.
Chop is under reconstruction — check before you travel
The railway station at Chop has been under reconstruction throughout 2026, and the works have repeatedly disrupted cross-border services. In August, the Košice – Mukachevo trains ran only as far as Chop for two periods, with passengers changing there for Mukachevo; on 13 October, Slovak trains between Košice, Chop and Mukachevo were cancelled for the day, together with the through carriages to Bratislava.
Changes have usually been announced only a few days ahead. Check both ZSSK and Ukrainian Railways the day before you travel, and if your trip depends on a tight connection, leave a buffer.
Air-raid alerts on the railway
Zakarpattia follows the national rules under Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 1129 of 15 September 2026: during a yellow alert trains run on schedule; during a red alert boarding, leaving trains and departures are suspended and people go to shelters. A train can also be stopped and passengers evacuated if there is a direct threat near the route — follow the crew. Step by step: our train guide from Poland. Leave at least 2–3 hours for international connections.
Before you board
- Customs limits: goods up to €500 and 50 kg, ordinary medicines up to 5 packages of each, cash of €10,000 or more declared. See entering Ukraine from Slovakia.
- Keep passport, tickets and insurance in your pocket, not in the suitcase.
- Save 112, your insurer's assistance line and your embassy's number.
