Train from Hungary to Ukraine: Chop, the Gauge Change and Tickets
Every train between Hungary and Ukraine passes through Chop — the point where Europe's railways and Ukraine's literally stop fitting each other. Here is what that means for your journey, and the ticketing quirks worth knowing before you book.

Two railway gauges meet at Chop
Ukraine's railways run on 1,520 mm gauge — the distance between the rails used across the former Russian Empire. Hungary and most of continental Europe use 1,435 mm standard gauge. An 85-millimetre difference is enough that a carriage built for one cannot run on the other.
Chop, on the Hungarian and Slovak border, is where the two systems meet, and the station has tracks of both gauges. Trains handle the difference in one of two ways:
- Changing the bogies. On through carriages, the wheel assemblies are swapped. Each carriage is lifted on hydraulic jacks, its broad-gauge bogies are rolled out, standard-gauge bogies are rolled in, and the couplings are changed too. You do not change trains — the carriage itself is converted. A standard procedure takes almost two hours for a train; Ukrainian Railways has cut it to about one hour for its Budapest service.
- Changing trains. On other services you get off at Chop, clear border and customs control at the station, and board a train of the other gauge.
Either way, Chop is a scheduled long stop — build it into your plans rather than reading it as a delay.
Direct trains: Kyiv – Budapest and Kyiv – Vienna
According to the Ukrainian Railways timetable valid from 28 June 2026:
- Train No. 9/10 "Transcarpathia" Kyiv – Budapest runs daily on broad-gauge carriages whose bogies are changed at Chop. Southbound it leaves Chop late in the evening and reaches Budapest around 06:00; northbound it leaves Chop in the morning and reaches Kyiv in the evening.
- Through carriages Kyiv – Budapest and Kyiv – Vienna also run daily via Chop, departing Chop shortly after midnight and reaching Budapest around 06:15 and Vienna Westbahnhof around 09:30. Corresponding carriages run from Vienna to Kyiv.
Timetables change — always check the current schedule in the Ukrainian Railways app before travelling.
Hungarian MÁV trains now stop at Chop
Until spring 2026, Hungarian state railway MÁV ran its own trains well into Zakarpattia — the InterCity Latorca to Mukachevo, the EuroCity Tisza to Uzhhorod, and the Ruthenia express from Uzhhorod.
After drone attacks on Zakarpattia in mid-May 2026, MÁV limited its trains to Chop: they no longer run to Mukachevo or Uzhhorod, and passengers board and leave them at Chop. To reach Mukachevo or Uzhhorod, change at Chop to a Ukrainian train.
This can change again. If you are planning around a MÁV service, check its current route on MÁV's own website before buying.
Tickets: two railways, two systems
Cross-border trains here are sold by both railways — Ukrainian Railways and MÁV — each through its own booking system. That has two practical consequences.
1. Ticket and seat reservation are separate things on MÁV. MÁV sells the right to travel (the ticket) and the reserved seat (the reservation) as distinct documents. A document bought through one railway may be read by the other's conductor as only part of that pair — there have been cases where a MÁV conductor treated a document bought through Ukrainian Railways as a seat reservation only and asked the passenger to pay the fare. To avoid it:
- buy legs on MÁV-operated trains from MÁV, and legs on Ukrainian trains from Ukrainian Railways;
- check that you hold both a ticket and, where required, a seat reservation;
- carry printed copies, not only a screen.
2. The same seat can be sold twice. Because the two systems sell seats independently, two passengers can end up holding tickets for the same seat — and both tickets can be perfectly valid. If someone is already in your seat, do not argue about whose ticket is real: show yours to the conductor, who will direct one of you to a free seat.
Border control at Chop
Passengers changing trains at Chop go through border and customs control in the station; on through carriages, officers check passengers during the stop. A second border-control hall was due to open at Chop station at the end of September 2026 to shorten the queues.
Chop station has also been under reconstruction, which has occasionally led to cancelled cross-border services at short notice. Check for changes the day before you travel.
Air-raid alerts on the railway
Zakarpattia follows the same rules as the rest of Ukraine. Under Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 1129 of 15 September 2026: during a yellow alert trains run on schedule; during a red alert boarding, leaving trains and departures are suspended and people go to shelters. A train can also be stopped and passengers evacuated if there is a direct threat near the route — follow the crew's instructions. What to do step by step is in our train guide from Poland.
And the railway's own advice applies here too: leave at least 2–3 hours for any connection, especially an international one.
Before you board
- Customs limits are the same as by road: goods up to €500 and 50 kg, ordinary medicines up to 5 packages of each, cash of €10,000 or more declared. See entering Ukraine from Hungary.
- Remember the time difference: Ukraine is one hour ahead of Hungary.
- Keep passport, tickets and insurance in your pocket, not in the suitcase.
- Save 112, your insurer's assistance line and your embassy's number.

Frequently asked questions
Why do trains change wheels at Chop?
Ukraine uses 1,520 mm railway gauge while Hungary and most of Europe use 1,435 mm. Through carriages have their bogies (wheel assemblies) exchanged at Chop so they can continue on the other gauge.
How long does the bogie change take?
A standard bogie exchange for a train takes almost two hours; Ukrainian Railways has reduced it to about one hour for its Kyiv – Budapest train.
Is there a direct train from Budapest to Kyiv?
Yes. Ukrainian Railways' train No. 9/10 "Transcarpathia" runs daily between Kyiv and Budapest via Chop, and through carriages also run between Kyiv, Budapest and Vienna.
Do Hungarian trains still go to Mukachevo?
Not since May 2026: after drone attacks on Zakarpattia, MÁV limited its trains to Chop. Change at Chop to a Ukrainian train for Mukachevo or Uzhhorod, and check MÁV for any later changes.
What if someone else has a ticket for my seat?
On cross-border trains sold by both Ukrainian Railways and MÁV, the same seat can be sold twice and both tickets can be valid. Show your ticket to the conductor, who will direct one of you to a free seat.
