Entering Ukraine from Hungary: The Rules and What You Can Bring
Every route from Hungary leads into Zakarpattia, Ukraine's westernmost region — through Chop, Berehove or Vylok. Fewer crossings than from Poland, shorter queues on most days, and one time zone to remember.

Two checks, and one hour
Crossing from Hungary means leaving the European Union and the Schengen area first — Hungarian border guards check you out, Hungarian customs can inspect what you take out — and then Ukrainian border control and customs.
Remember the clock: Hungary is one hour behind Ukraine. Crossing hours for the smaller checkpoints are usually published in Central European Time, and your train or bus times change by an hour the moment you cross.
Cash of €10,000 or more must be declared in writing on both sides — when leaving the EU and when entering Ukraine.
Documents for the Ukrainian side
- Passport valid for your stay, plus a visa if your nationality needs one.
- Medical insurance for the whole stay — foreign nationals are expected to hold it, and officers may ask.
- A clear purpose of travel, with an invitation or letter for work, study or volunteering.
- Means to support yourself for the stay.
Full checklist: entry requirements.

The same rules, explained in more detail, are in our guide to entering from Poland — Ukrainian customs applies them identically on every border.
Zakarpattia under martial law
Zakarpattia is far from the front line, but it is not outside the war. In May 2026 drones struck the region, including Uzhhorod for the first time since 2022, and air-raid alerts sound here as everywhere else in Ukraine. Install an official alert app before you cross, and see how yellow and red alerts work. Curfew is set regionally — check it for the towns on your route.
