Bus from Hungary to Ukraine: Routes and the Border
Buses from Hungary run into Zakarpattia and on to Lviv and Kyiv. They can only use two crossings — which shapes both the route and the wait.

Where buses go
Buses leave mainly from Budapest, with services also from eastern Hungarian cities such as Debrecen and Nyíregyháza. In Ukraine they serve Zakarpattia — Uzhhorod, Mukachevo, Berehove — and continue to Lviv, Kyiv and other cities.
Several carriers run these routes. Compare them on a ticket aggregator or the carrier's site, and check the exact departure and arrival stops, the luggage allowance, and which crossing the bus uses.
Only two crossings take buses
Of the six road crossings from Hungary, buses can use only the two big 24-hour ones:
- Záhony – Chop (Tysa) — the main route, roughly 313 km from Budapest.
- Beregsurány – Luzhanka — near Berehove, roughly 310 km from Budapest.
The smaller crossings at Kosyno and Dzvinkove do not serve buses at all. With fewer lanes to spread across, the time a bus spends at the border depends heavily on the day — plan for a few hours, more on weekends and around holidays.
What happens at the border
- Hungarian exit control — passports checked, sometimes collected by the driver.
- Ukrainian border control — officers may ask individual passengers about the purpose of travel and, sometimes, for proof of medical insurance.
- Customs — passengers usually leave the bus with their luggage for inspection.
The bus leaves only when everyone is cleared, so one passenger's problem is everyone's delay.
Rules worth knowing
- Customs limits: goods up to €500 and 50 kg per person, ordinary medicines up to 5 packages of each, cash of €10,000 or more declared. Details: entering Ukraine from Hungary.
- Never carry packages for anyone else.
- Keep documents on you, not in the hold — passport, visa if needed, insurance on your phone and printed.
- Mind the clock: Ukraine is one hour ahead of Hungary. Arrival times on your ticket may be in either time zone — check which.
- Check curfew hours at your destination, and know what to do during an alert: yellow and red alerts.
Prefer to avoid road queues? The train via Chop is often the more predictable option.
